Joint
project of the University of Montenegro, Hewlett-Packard and
UNESCO-ROSTE: “Stemming Brain-Drain”
100 Young scientists left Montenegro in the last 8 years
Podgorica – Stemming of ”brain-drain” from Montenegro is
the main objective of the joint initiative of the University of
Montenegro, Hewlett-Packard and UNESCO-ROSTE, which was
presented yesterday in Podgorica.
Hewlett-Packard provided the university with two servers, 7
computers and US$48,000 while UNESCO provided €15,000 for this
year. |
Project
coordinator and national coordinator for cooperation with UNESCO, Mr.
Sreten Sekuletic, said that the brain drain of highly educated and
highly qualified people has been a serious problem in the past 15
years.
‘‘The purpose of the project is to create a database of experts
mainly from the field of physics and computer science. This database
will be available on a special section of the university website, thus
making possible cooperation with expatriate experts willing to help
the university in developing new young experts’’ said Mr. Skuletic,
confirming that many of them have already been contacted and are
willing to cooperate.
‘‘If we manage to create the necessary working conditions, our
people that have accomplished remarkable results worldwide will be
able to visit the university and help young experts to develop their
potential.’’ said Mr. Skuletic.
He also said that young people today would not consider leaving their
country in search of better opportunities, if the necessary working
conditions and opportunities to follow lectures by eminent professors
on-line were created at home.
He added that from 1990 –1998 around 100 young experts had left the
University of Montenegro in search of better career opportunities
elsewhere. 48 left for Serbia, and 49 of them started careers abroad,
a figure that accounted for almost 20% of the University staff at that
time.
Representatives of Hewlett-Packard and UNESCO expressed hopes that
their support would result in introducing new educational programs
which could be realized in cooperation with the expatriate experts
abroad.
University rector Mr. Ljubisa Stankovic, and the minister of education
Mr.Slobodan Backovic were also present during the project
presentation.
